Kolkata is all set to roll out eco-friendly buses running on biogas as fuel. As many as 12 buses running on biogas will start playing on 12 routes in the city from March, Hindustan Times has reported.

The first route to get these buses is between Ultadanga and Garia, a stretch of 17 kms.
According to the report, the fares are just Re 1 irrespective of the distance. The low fare has been attributed to the fuel efficiency of the vehicle which can cover 20 km on a kg of biogas that costs just Rs 30.
Biogas is the cheapest fuel. The lowest bus fare from Ultadanga to Garia is Rs 12, but we will bring it down to Re 1. We can offer it and still have a margin that is enjoyed by the normal operators using diesel. All other parameters of performance, such as vehicle speed will be the same as normal buses,” said Jyoti Prakash Das, chairman and managing director of Phoenix India Research and Development Group, an alternative energy company that has been selected by the union ministry of new and renewable energy for kick starting the use of biogas vehicles in Bengal.

The 60-seater non-AC buses cost Rs 13 lakhs per vehicle.
Delhi too had in 2016 planned to have biogas buses on its roads, but the move was dropped in favor of electric buses, which are still in the trial phase.
