Cristiano Ronaldo’s new zig-zag patterned haircut drew a range of reactions when he unveiled it to the world ahead of Portugal’s 2-2 draw with the USA on Wednesday.

However, his critics were then forced to beat a hasty retreat when the word went round that his hair style was, in fact, a tribute to a young boy named Erik Ortiz Cruz, who had undergone brain surgery to remove a tumor. Ronaldo had apparently styled his hair in such a way so as to match the youngster’s scar on his head.

Ronaldo got the marks cut behind his right ear after visiting the boy whom he had paid to have a successful surgery.

And according to Spanish media, sources close to the Real Madrid ace say that Ronaldo was deeply moved by the experience and had the two marks positioned in acknowledgement of the two scars left by the operation.

Ronaldo has been involved in an impressive amount of charity work and has a history of footing medical bills for terminally-ill children.

He recently donated the £456,000 of prize money he received for Real Madrid winning the Champions League to a non-government children’s charity.

And Ronaldo was named the ‘most charitable athlete’ in the world by Dosomething.org after donating an astonishing £5million after the Nepal earthquake to the Save The Children fund.

He has also donated £53,000 to pay for a ten-month-old baby’s operation and shelled out another £105,000 to pay for a research center at the hospital where his mother was being treated for cancer.

Back in 2013, he said: “My father always taught me that when you help other people, then God will give you double.

The lines in Ronaldo’s head were spotted during Portugal’s 1-1 Euro 2016 draw with Iceland.

He was branded a “sore loser” by Iceland defender Kari Arnason for failing to shake hands with Aron Gunnarsson.
