When 28-year-old year Sarwan Singh saw a dog drowning in an irrigation canal, he didn’t even flinch before taking off his turban to save it.  Sarwan was travelling in Punjab, when he spotted a crowd of people pointing at the canal.

“I stopped my car and went over to check what was happening. I was shocked to see that there was a dog drowning, but no one was actually helping.”

Sarwan, couldn’t swim, but he could improvise a rope – and so he did, with his turban. ‘The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked. They thought I was disrespecting my faith,’ Sarwan remembered, speaking to Metro UK.  Bystanders helped Sarwan rappel down to the canal’s banks using his turban cloth. He then reached out and caught the dog.

The dog, however, didn’t realize it was being rescued

‘The dog wasn’t comfortable. He was not coming to me at all. We had to follow him for around 200 meters before I was able to wrap my turban around his neck and pull him to safety,’ he said. ‘The dog was frightened, so I fed him some biscuits and let him go on his own.’

Such acts of turban-powered bravery isn’t new – just last year,  2 Sikh men from Sangrur took off their turban to save the lives of eight drowning youths who had gone to a canal for the immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi.
