On May 28th, the Bihar Intermediate Board examination results were announced and the families of the toppers in the board were ecstatic. Later, when these toppers were interviewed on camera and asked about their subjects, things went down south from there, pretty quickly.
Ruby Rai, the class 12 topper from arts stream, was asked to name the subjects that she had virtually topped. And her answers were astonishing to say the least. She named one of her subjects as “Prodikal science” instead of Political science. Also, she said that this “Prodikal” science subject was about learning to cook. She was clueless about the content of her subjects as well as she couldn’t list all her subjects that she received distinction in. She has received 444/500 but she thought she had received 444/600.
Another topper, Saurabh Shresth of science stream, was also similarly embarrassed on camera when he was asked basic questions of his subjects. He was very comfortable while answering questions about his preparation, but as soon as his knowledge was put to the test, he felt out of place. He was not able to answer elementary questions like the link between water and H2O.

Ms. Ruby secured 89 per cent in the exam, while Mr. Saurabh secured 97 per cent. Interestingly, both are from V.N. Rai College, Hajipur, in Vaishali district.
We are not trying to put down any student or discourage them, but are reflecting upon the plight of education system in the state of Bihar. Cheating has been a prevalent issue in board exams here which has fared unfair for the deserving student. The credibility of the whole examination process of the board has come under fire.

The Education Minister of Bihar, Ashok Choudhary said that from what it looks like either proxies took the exam for the students or the answer sheets submitted by students were replaced later with better ones.

The Minister said, “We made great efforts to reverse the State’s bad image for mass copying during Board examinations. We cannot allow someone to blot it. There might be an “education mafia” exploiting students but one cannot question the whole examination.”
After this incident of interviews the government has ordered probe into the matter. It had asked seven toppers from the two stream to appear before a special committee today (June 3) for an interview and retest. The handwriting of the students with their answer sheets would be compared too.
The Bihar government had received a lot of flak from the people when pictures of mass cheating in matric examinations had gone viral and had made the international news. It had apparently made special arrangements like installing CCTV cameras to conduct free and fair examination but the efforts seem to be going in vain.
We urge the Bihar government to take stronger steps to prevent malpractices in examination as it can make or break careers. The deserving candidates must be given complete justice over this matter.
