Most people probably live under the assumption that their place of dwelling is a safe haven from all the dangers that lurk “out there.” But little do they know that many common household products contain deadly chemicals that are known to cause cancer, reproductive harm, birth defects and other health damage. Here are five of the most popular categories to avoid for the safety of you and your family:

1. Air fresheners.

They’re a staple in many American households, but conventional air fresheners are a hotbed of poisonous substances that could leave you and your loved ones infertile, brain-damaged or chronically ill.
Most air fresheners are loaded with  cancer-causing volatile organic compounds, which interfere with reproduction, respiration, and cellular regeneration. A 2008 study conducted by Anne Steinemann at the University of Washington found that all air fresheners tested emitted chemicals known to be carcinogenic, meaning they cause cancer.

2.  Candles.

Similar to commercial air fresheners, many scented candles are also toxic. A study pioneered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that nearly half of all scented candles on the market contain lead wiring in their wicks, which is released into the air upon burning. This lead might make the wicks more stable, but it also leads to hormone disruption, behavioral disorders, and various other health problems.

3. Nonstick Cookware

Maybe you can’t see it, but when you heat up non-stick cookware, its coating starts decomposing at a molecular level, releasing various toxic particles and gasses based on fluoride, a lot of which are carcinogenic. Immediately you have to replace your non-stick cookware with ceramic or pans and pots which don’t release dangerous fumes.

4. Plastic Bottles and Food Containers

Bisphenol A is a chemical that is used to harden plastic in Tupperware, water bottles, and other products made of plastic. Bisphenol A affects negatively on our health. The Food and Drug Administration has changed their stance on Bisphenol A in 2010, saying there’s “some concern” over its impact on the behavior, brain, and prostate glands in young children, babies, and fetuses.

In order to prevent yourself and the environment, you should go with reusable glass or metal water bottles and food containers.

5. Artificial Sweeteners

If you have any of these sweeteners, throw them out immediately:

  •     Acesulfame K may be carcinogenic, causes tumors and affects pregnancy
  •     Aspartame has been linked to skin cancers and can be deadly for people with phenylketonuria
  •     Saccharinmay cause bladder cancer, is indigestible and gets excreted by the liver unchanged
  •     Sorbitol, is only partially digested in the intestines, causes diarrhea, bloating and gas

You can replace these artificial sweeteners with the following ones which are healthy and can be naturally found and cultivated without refining:

  •     Stevia can lower blood pressure and blood sugar
  •     Erythritol has no effect on blood sugar, insulin or cholesterol levels
  •     Xylitol, can improve bone density and reduce risk of tooth decay
  •     Yacon syrup feeds good bacteria in the intestines and can help fight against constipation
