A group of doctors in Meerut performed the first Ayurvedic surgery in March. Yes, you heard it right!
Ojaswi Sharma from Meerut became the first patient to undergo the operation. He is 83-years-old and was operated to remove his 240-gram prostate without involving any antibiotics. The surgery was performed at Meerut’s Anand hospital where the doctors used just the anaesthesia and no antibiotics.
In regular surgeries, doctors use antibiotics to reduce any surgical site infection. IN Sharma’s case, the doctors used Ayurvedic herbs, such as Amla (Indian gooseberry), guggul (gum resin), turmeric, shigru (drumstick).

According to doctors, Sharma was allergic to allopathic medicines and therefore doctors decided to use Ayurvedic alternatives instead. The decision was taken after urologist Subash Yadav consulted the nation’s top Ayurvedic experts. Post operation, Sharma was under observation for a month and has fully recovered now.

Hemant Khushawa, retired professor and head of the National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, said,” Special medicines comprising extracts of giloy, shigru, amla, turmeric and guggul were used in calculating proportions to be administered to Sharma. Shigru is for mild infections and is also a natural painkiller. Amla increases immunity while giloy is helpful in detoxifying the liver. The medicines were started 10 days before the operation.”

Doctors around the world are considering conducting surgery with Ayurvedic support, the beginning of a new era. This is a great achievement in the medical sciences and medical experts are looking forward to conducting more researches and trials for the success of such methods.

Medical experts believe that using Ayurveda in surgery can be a new ray of hope in the world where antibiotics are a dying cause.
