The beloved dancing inmates from a detention and rehabilitation center in the Philippines, CPDRC, perform an epic routine choreographed especially for them by Michael Jackson’s This Is It choreographer and associate director, Travis Payne. The inmates gathered in a flash mob style to put on the routine, which Payne taught to them over the course of two days. They danced to “They Don’t Care About Us,” a controversial single from Jackson’s 1996 album, HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I.
The dance was sponsored by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as a promotion for the This Is It DVD, and it currently has over 20 million views. However, it isn’t the first time the dance group has gone viral. They first came to attention in 2007 with a choreographed dance to Jackson’s Thriller, Which the King of Pop was a fan of himself before his death in 2009.
The group dancing stemmed from a program created by the facility to encourage prisoners to participate in daily exercise. The dancing inmates became a massive hit online, and the program not only kept the prisoners fit in body, but in mind and spirit as well. The routine ends in the prisoners forming a powerful, unified peace sign.
