The world is advancing technologies at an extremely fast pace. Today, it is impossible to predict what to expect from our tomorrow. There are many things that once appeared to be just a part of our imagination but have become reality today. One such wonder is mobile phones with such wonderful data speeds and internet connectivity.

The progress of technology does not stop there. Scientists have come up with a unique and new technology that makes use of Wi-Fi signals to see through the walls. The unique application of the local Wi-Fi signals is sure to bring a great change in the modern world. The research has been presented by Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) of MIT.

Read along and know more about this unique technology.

A Unique Passive Wireless Detection System

Understanding the uses of this passive wireless detection system is sure to help the world find answers to many unanswered questions. The new system is quite similar to the conventional radar system and depends on radar shifts to detect moving bodies through obstacles, hurdles and walls. The system does not actively transmit radio waves. It in fact relies on passive and existing Wi-Fi waves for this purpose. This new kind of radar is undetectable as it does not use active radio transmission or electrical signals.

Practical Experimentation

Just the study alone was insufficient to come to a conclusion that could be completely reliable. That is the reason why the scientists conducted a practical experiment to conclude with the results they derived. This is how they performed the actual experiments. They made use of two receiving channels to carry out the ambiguity analysis. The first one used for this purpose was the Wi-Fi router and it played the role of a wireless signal transmitter. The role of the second reference channel was to reflect the signal it receives from the moving target and in the course measures the reference signal. The measurement of reference and surveillance signals reveals facts like the velocity of the object and the location where the target has been detected.

Future Applications of This Wireless System

The practical experimentation has confirmed that the research is true and wifi signals can actually be used to unravel facts and act like radar signals. This new system is sure to help with many future applications and open up new horizons of development.

This technology may help to open up new avenues for filmmakers. It may help them do away with the lousy suits that were inevitable for special effects. The researchers are extremely excited about this new finding and what revolutionary changes it may bring.

Limitations of this System

Every new development has certain limitations and the new technology that uses Wi-Fi to see through walls is really no exception. While this finding is unique, there are some limitations that need to be taken into account too. Here we have made a list of these limitations in the present model:

The system can surely track the objects moving towards it. It is assumed that the body is moving towards the system.
The system is able to track movements of objects facing it. Full skeletal tracking is however not possible with the present system.

Quotes From the Experts

While there are certain limitations in the findings, it still remains a turning point in the world of research. Here are what some experts feel regarding this unique finding.

Dina Katabi, an MIT Professor, reveals that they are trying to use this technology to make an in-home device that may detect if a family member has become unconscious. She adds that the technology may also be used to operate TV and lights after making a note of where you are. It may even be used to monitor the temperature of the room accordingly.
